How Can Medical Dermatology Benefit Me?

Medical dermatology is defined as the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders, while cosmetic dermatology concentrates on improving the skin’s appearance. We are proud to offer both medical and cosmetic services at our office. There is a fair amount of overlap between the two, since treating a skin condition like acne will also improve the patient’s appearance. Medical dermatology, however, can also relieve discomfort caused by inflammation or allergic reactions. If the patient is being treated for skin cancer, medical dermatology can even save their life.
What is Mohs Surgery?
Mohs surgery or Mohs micrographic surgery is a technique used to treat skin cancer, particularly the two most common types, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It was first developed in the 1930s by Dr. Frederic Mohs and has since been refined so that it has an impressive cure rate of 99 percent for new cancers and 95 percent for returning cancers.
Mohs surgery is an outpatient medical dermatology procedure. The surgeon will remove the visible part of the cancer along with a margin of seemingly healthy tissue. The process is repeated until a tissue sample is obtained that is cancer-free. The big advantage of this technique is that the patient goes home knowing they no longer have cancer.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder that mainly affects the skin. The immune system causes the new skin cells to grow abnormally fast, so the body can’t shed them quickly enough. The excess skin cells accumulate and form scaly patches.
There are five types of psoriasis: plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular and erythrodermic. Plaque psoriasis is by far the most common type and affects around 80 percent of sufferers. While there is so far no cure for psoriasis, there are many medical dermatology treatments that can help control the symptoms.
